Merle Norman Pro Pen Eyeliner in ‘Sharp Black’ – Review & swatches

Pro Pen has been my go-to eyeliner for past couple of weeks. I think I have tested it enough to share my views about it.

Pro Pen Eyeliner
From thick to thin … from swirls to swoops, this easy-to-use liquid liner pen makes lining your eyes as simple as signing your name. Its slim felt-tipped applicator acts like a fine-point marker while its ergonomic grip lets you control the effect. The harder you press, the bolder the line it creates — so easy! Best yet, its long-wearing formula won’t smudge or budge for up to 14 hours! Water-resistant. Ophthalmologist tested.

Safe for contact lens wearers. Fragrance-free

My thoughts
Let me start off by saying that this is by far the most pigmented pen eyeliner I’ve come across. Two to three swipes and there you go! Besides, I think it’s a good choice if you’re an eyeliner novice; the pen style is truly a savior if you happen to have shaky hands as it gives you better grip and control. You must know that I’m a gel-liner person but with this, I think it’s rather quick and easy to get a winged eyeliner look.

This eyeliner delivers good amount of pigment. I wouldn’t say it’s the deepest-darkest black out there; neither the intensity parallels the concentration of a liquid eyeliner but it sure builds up to an opaque black as you can see in the photos. It builds nicely -- the second coat doesn't take off the first coat which is what I really like about it. Speaking of the other good qualities, I’d say it goes on fluid-y, never skips and it doesn’t tug on my eye at all. The felt-tip applicator is thin, long and pretty flexible at the tip which allows it to follow the curvature of my eyes smoothly and line with great precision. You can do a thin line up to a bold chunky line or whichever way you like. The formula also dries fairly quickly which prevents any transfer to my upper lid but I still suggest you wait for a while before opening your eye all the way. It wears on me for good six hours (through my working day) without budging however I suppose it will lose some intensity over time on oily lids or if you don't prime/apply concealer over your bare lids before application; but of course it wouldn’t disappear altogether. It indeed is water-resistant (not water-proof) so it doesn’t come off unless you actually rub it off.

Overall, I am pleased with this product. I've tried CSP Knock Out Eye Marker (a cheaper option) which requires more layering compared to Pro Pen. Regardless of the hefty price tag, I think it's worth it. If you’re someone who doesn’t have a steady hand or if you’re looking for some easy-to-use eyeliner, you may consider giving it a shot.

You might like it if…
  • You expect good pigmentation
  • You have shaky hands
  • You’re happy with the thin/long/flexible felt-tip applicator
  • You expect it not to tug/pull on your eye
  • You expect a good wear time
  • You expect it to come off with a makeup remover/water without hassle
You might not like it if…
  • You expect it to stay put long over oily/bare lids
  • You prefer water-proof formulas
  • You have a habit of rubbing your eyes

  1. Pen liners are so much easier to use though my hands are steady! Long wear time is a major plus but I have this weird habit of rubbing my eyes >_<

  2. The pigmentation looks amazing both on your eyes and swatch. Have you tried Maybelline's Master Precise Liner Pen? The tip of it looks almost identical to this Merle Norman eyeliner. I really recommend the Maybelline one :)
